History Of The Cooperativa del Sur del Cauca

The Cooperativa del Sur del Cauca, or COSURCA, was founded in 1992 on March 12th. It is a secondary-level cooperative that, at the time of this writing, is made up of one cooperative, eleven producer associations, and three territorial municipalities or entities that spans the southern region of Cauca as well as the center of the southern Colombian Macizo mountains. Upon its establishment, the cooperative’s goal was to further Cauca’s economic development, which had been pretty much severed from the rest of Colombia as a result of political violence and civil war. Thanks to the aid of the Alternative Development program of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime as well as the support of the Integrated Rural Development Program of the Colombian Government along with Cauca’s regional government and local municipalities, small farmers got the investment and production support they needed to seek alternatives to illicit coca production in the Southern Cauca and Northern Nariño regions. As a result, these small farmer organizations now have the necessary resources to establish markets for their products, with a particular focus on coffee, in addition to receiving technical assistance with production and financing via a loan and savings program.

Today, 1500 small farmer families are being provided for by COSURCA in the commercial, organization, political, judicial, and technical development domains. This entails a key focus on food security, community self-sufficiency via the production of staple crops, fair trade and organic coffee production, and the production and commercialization of tropical fruits for juices and pulp.

Since day one, COSURCA has adhered to seven core values: cooperation, hard work, honesty, respect (for individuals and nature), responsibility, social engagement, and solidarity.

As a central tenet in alignment with its economic development policy, COSURCA endeavors to follow best inclusivity practices by involving women and ethnic minority groups within the various projects they work to enact within its communities.

COSURCA balances managing a line of wholesale roasted coffee for its local market with the global export of fair trade coffee to small and medium wholesale coffee roasters. 

Tasting Notes And Flavors

This Typica varietal Colombian micro lot is a 100% Arabica washed process light roast coffee (our roast level 2) that was grown by Isney Solana at an altitude of 1700 m above sea level. It features a whopping cupping score of 85.63 and has a fruity kick to it: with every sip you’ll experience its bright flavors bursting with the taste of cherries and raspberries that playfully mix with the sweet tasting notes of brown sugar and coconut.

We recommend trying this delectable light roast as a pour-over brew (I personally prefer the Chemex).
