JOB SUMMARY
This team member will implement and uphold the highest coffee and beverage standards, through training, quality control, and research and development. This role involves training the café team and ensuring consistency throughout each location. Creating engagement from the Equator Team, while elevating the coffee standard and skills amongst the team is essential for this position. It further extends to providing training courses to the public, while working towards offering SCA courses and certifying the cupping lab. This team member requires a deep passion for coffee and is intrigued by developing new projects. The barista trainer will spend 50% of their time with café responsibilities and 50% of their time on wholesale/production responsibilities.
CAFÉ RESPONSIBILITIES
Barista Training
- Creates the highest standard of Barista for the best representation of the brand (quality, consistency, knowledge, order of events, operational flow, speed of service, customer service).
- Barista training for new and existing employees and managers, including follow-up and evaluation.
- Develop and deliver training on hot drinks, cold drinks, and all brewing techniques.
- Conduct hands-on sessions on espresso extraction, milk frothing, and latte art.
- Provide staff training in coffee knowledge, other product knowledge & retail brewing equipment.
- Guide trainees on customer service standards and professionalism.
- Assess performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Track individual progress
- Stay updated on industry trends and new brewing methods.
- Develop training materials, manuals, and resources.
- Helps innovate the career pathway of the team, and strategy to increase skill baseline.
- Creates and inspires engagement from the teams.
Quality Control
- Visits the cafes on different days to conduct quality control checks
- Holds responsibility for quality control for all beverages in the Equator Cafes.
- Ensures staff are trained to clean equipment and report concerns to management as needed.
- Demonstrate expertise in preparing a wide range of coffee beverages, ensuring consistency and quality.
WHOLESALE RESPONSIBILITIES
Training & Lab Certification
- Prepare and offer staff and public courses, including Roastery Tours, Brew It Right, Coffee 101, Barista Training
- Suggest and create new trainings.
- Participate in trainings externally to become a certified SCA trainer.
- Create, Implement, and conduct SCA training
- Continue to work towards Professional Level Certification with the Specialty Coffee Association
- Prepare Cupping Lab to become a certified training facility.
Research & Development/Projects
- Creates SCA & Non SCA trainings
- Sets recipes for coffee standards for the cafes
- Creates and implements recipes for seasonal beverages in the cafes.
- Create and implement permanent items for café menus like frappes.
- Make suggestions/innovate ideas on products to sell
- Lead research and testing for the creation of new products. Ex: instant coffee, syrups, coffee candy etc.
Engagement
- Writes coffee-based blogs for the website.
- Collaborates with marketing to increase engagement through social media (Instagram/TikTok), YouTube, podcast, etc. This could be through content, tutorials, etc.
- Organizes and hosts coffee/tea-related events to increase engagement.
- Connect with the coffee community. For example, finding coffee awards to submit to.
Wholesale Customer Support
- Occasional visits to support wholesale café customers.
- Occasional training to wholesale customer staff, preferably at our Almonte location.
Coffee Roasting & Production
- Roast coffee regularly (preferably once a month) to keep skills honed.
- Act as backup roaster when the lead roaster is absent.
- Work with the lead roaster to plan and implement the Microlot program, including sourcing, roasting, overseeing packaging, staff training and providing marketing materials for website and social media.
- On-call production team member to cover for absences (when able).
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 5 years Barista experience required
- Preferred Barista Training/Head of coffee/ SCA AST experience preferred but not required
- SCA training preferred but not required
- This position requires the barista trainer to attain the SCA AST certification within the first 8 months of the position in one course and will work towards attaining the AST certification for multiple courses overtime.
- Ability to build relationships and work as part of a team.
- Ability to set a professional example and direct the work of others.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Comfortable with technology.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- Contract for a minimum of 5 years, with extension afterward.
- Salary based, with 40 hours per week.
- Compensation is based on experience and qualifications
- All standard Equator benefits as per Handbook as well as $2500 in Medical Benefits and 2% DPSP.

- Requires working on weekends.
